History of Stalis

The majority of the land in Stalis (aka Stalida) was owned by local residents from the village of Mohos, the village on the other side of the hill. Herding was a big part of their livelihood and herders would bring their animals to water stalls scattered around Stalis – that is where the name Stalis comes from.

In addition to herding, good farmland was in high demand. The majority of the land parcels close to the water were considered valuable not because of their proximity to the beach but due to the high quality of the soil and the flat surface.

In the late 1960s, the first large hotel was built. Still, there was no infrastructure and most of the land was used for farming. Things started to change in the early 1980s. As more and more tourists got to know Stalis, its natural beauty and central location demand for accommodation significantly increased. In a typical Greek fashion small hotels start popping up like mushrooms trying to capitalize on the new economic opportunity. Thankfully, Stalis has been developed around its relaxing, low-key, respectful atmosphere. Visitors can find a wide range of restaurants, shops and cocktail bars by the water. If clubbing and intense nightlife is your thing you can always visit Hersonissos and Malia, two well-known party resorts a few miles away.
